Whether it's Jiu-Jitsu, Karate, Taekwondo or Muay Thai, having a clear belt-rank system is what gives students a concrete reason to keep training.
Every combat discipline has its own promotion tradition — belts, kyus, cords, degrees. But the management challenge is the same for any coach: keeping clear who's at which level, what's left for the next rank, and how to communicate that without relying on memory.
Belt ranking is one of the strongest retention drivers at a gym. A student who doesn't know how far they are from the next level loses a sense of progress — and it's easier to quit something with no visible checkpoints. A well-defined rank system gives the student a concrete goal and the coach a retention tool.
The first step is listing, in order, every rank in the discipline — from the starting level to the most advanced. This applies both to disciplines with an established tradition (like Jiu-Jitsu belts) and to gyms that create their own internal level system. What matters is that the list is unique per discipline, since a student may train more than one at once, each with its own rank progression.
Setting criteria such as a minimum attendance count, minimum time at the current rank, or a specific technical evaluation makes the process more transparent for the student and easier for the coach to justify. It doesn't need to be rigid — it can just be a reference — but it helps avoid the feeling that promotions are arbitrary.
Whenever possible, students should be able to see their own rank and promotion history without needing to ask the coach. That cuts down on answering the same question repeatedly and reinforces a steady sense of progress.
When it's time for a belt ceremony, identifying who's eligible, inviting them and putting together the final list is far easier when you've kept a running record all year of who's ready to move up — instead of rebuilding that list the night before the event.
In MestreDOJO, each coach sets up their own disciplines and, within each one, an ordered list of ranks — including, if you want, a minimum attendance count as a reference. A student can train more than one discipline, each with its own rank progression, and you can quickly see who's ready for the next promotion event.
